The Requirements

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the VCSEL Product Engineer opportunity, you will have:
  • A master's degree or PhD in Science or Engineering; we also will consider candidates who have a bachelor's degree and significant relevant experience
  • Direct VCSEL device and/or epi growth experience
  • Firm understanding of VCSEL device physics
  • Firm understanding epi technology and how it impacts device performance
  • Knowledge of semiconductor physics
  • Experience with high-volume production is strongly preferred
  • Solid leadership and interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence others

You also will need to be willing and able to travel, sometimes internationally, although we don't anticipate that you will travel more than about 10% of the time. You may travel to customer sites and other IQE locations, including the United Kingdom.

The Role

Reporting to the Process Engineering Manager, you will join a team in Taunton that has doubled in size over the past year. The team, part of the larger VCSEL Product Group, currently focuses on technology for 3D sensing and gesture recognition, and is actively exploring other applications. Internally you'll work with IQE process engineers as well as with the Photonics technology group in the UK. Externally you'll work with customer management and engineering.

You will be responsible for ensuring that IQE's VCSEL epi-wafers meet or exceed customer requirements, and also help ensure that the IQE manufacturing sites have all the information required to cost-effectively produce world-class material. A key aspect of this role will be to analyze and correlate customer and manufacturing data and provide insight for improvement and troubleshooting activities. You will be expected to be proactive in attempting to head off possible issues gleaned from subtle insights in data review.

  • Support customers to improve designs and understand manufacturing constraints of requests
  • Work closely with data analysts to prescribe standard analysis routines to be performed on vast amount of customer and process data
  • Act as technical expert focused on ensuring that IQE's VCSEL technology is best in class
  • Adhere to all internal safety, HR, environmental and quality guidelines & procedures.

The essence of the role is to connect the dots among three key information sources in order to provide drive continuous improvement and solve problems. The sources: Your robust understanding of device physics and our production processes Insight from granular analysis of our own extensive data as well as customer data Your knowledge of customer applications, goals and challenges

Your technical expertise will be essential, but just as important will be your interpersonal abilities. For example, the process engineers will be peers, and you'll need to establish collaborative relationships with them, based on credibility and mutual goals. You'll also interact directly with customers, and you'll need a customer service mindset along with the willingness to manage expectations as necessary.

It's important enough that it bears repeating: If you are used to small scale production or R&D environments, you will have to make the adjustment to high-volume production.
